Urban One’s multi-platform award-winning digital content and editorial division, iONE Digital, today announced the launch of the new NewsOne.com and CassiusLife.com joint cover Bison ONE Newsroom, titled “From the Yard to the Frontlines.” This special cover spotlights student journalists from Howard University’s Cathy Hughes School of Communications, bearing the namesake of Urban One Founder and Chairperson, Ms. Cathy Hughes. The initiative marks a significant moment for the company as it strengthens its ongoing commitment to cultivating the next generation of Black media talent.

Leading the way in building this partnership included iONE Digital VP of Content Kirsten West Savali, NewsOne Managing Editor Monique Judge, and journalist and Howard University professor Dr. Stacey Patton, the Bison ONE Newsroom gives students the opportunity to produce real reporting and storytelling that lives across two of iONE Digital’s leading platforms, NewsOne.com and CassiusLife.com. Student journalists featured on the cover include Harmony Bailey, Khariss Bender, Naiya Brown, Zoe Cummings, Amen Debretsion, Robert Hill, Logan Johns, Mekhi Neal, Duwayne Portis, Grant Roundtree, Myla Roundy, Dru Strand, Boris Turner, Jada White, and Amyah Wright.

For 45 years, Urban One has been committed to amplifying Black voices and telling the stories that matter to our community. Watching these young journalists step confidently into their purpose reaffirms why this work is so important. The Bison ONE Newsroom is more than a partnership—it is an investment in our future. “These young Black journalists are walking in the tradition, legacy, and purpose of many Black journalists who have risked their lives and livelihoods to tell unvarnished truths about a nation that has been committed to preserving life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for only a few. Their voices honor generations of freedom fighters who have come before and breathe life into all those who will come after, and Urban One is proud to walk into the future beside them,” said Kirsten West Savali, VP, Content, iONE Digital and movement journalist.

“In a moment when journalism is being hollowed out, politicized, and stripped of moral courage, these young Black journalists represent what endures: accountability, proximity to truth, and responsibility to community. Bison One doesn’t just show the future of journalism; it shows the return of journalism to its highest purpose,” added Stacey Patton, award-winning journalist and Howard University professor.

A First-of-its-Kind Collaboration Elevating HBCU Voices

This newsroom expands on the 2024 NewsOne x Bison Election partnership and stands as the first collaboration of its kind between a national media company and an HBCU journalism program. By aligning Black-led institutions, the initiative highlights the vital role HBCUs play in shaping culture, political awareness, and the evolution of Black media.

The multimedia package—housed on a custom hub across NewsOne.com and CassiusLife.com —includes:

Together, the collection offers a powerful look at how emerging Black storytellers are challenging narratives, documenting the moment, and shaping the cultural record.

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
